History of The Lord Pickleby
Born in England in 1876, Lord Pickleby ‘s life and exploits straddled in the 19th and 20th Centuries leaving an indelible mark.  He was a maverick, a socialite and a spy.  An inventor, a writer, a philosopher and a thespian.  He was a sportsman of exceeding talent, a gambler, a womanizer, but above all, a scoundrel.   He was the original international man of mystery.  An enigma to all who knew him, his charisma and charm seduced everyone who crossed his path.  His name was often whispered discretely by blushing ladies, giggling as they sipped their afternoon tea.  His roguishness was admired by some and abhorred by others.  In truth, he was resented only those who wished they could be him.  He lived his colourful life on his own terms.

Lord Pickleby was equally at ease with politicians and royalty.  He could play any role.  Renowned for his thespian talents, he directed and appeared in numerous theatre shows in Cape Town, often performing multiple roles when theatre goers were non-the-wiser.  His performance as Brutus was described by the Cape Argus (March 16, 1902) as ‘a forceful performance as sharp and piercing as the blade that killed Ceasar’.

Lord Pickleby’s aversion to conformity and his general disregard for rules was legendary.  He was reputed to be a spy and demonstrated his contempt for patriotism by fighting for both the Boers and the Brits simultaneously, both of which awarded him medals of honour for bravery.  His perfect attendance recorded for both sides remain unexplained.

After the war he held numerous ocean-swimming records (breast stroke of course).  He successfully swam from Robben Island to the mainland, but in later years chose terra firma to excel on.  In 1907 he played cricket and football for South Africa at the same time.

Lord Pickleby was a fashion visionary for his time and is believed to be the first man to wear ‘his underpants higher than his breeches, so as to be clearly visible’.  May people credit him as the inventor of aerobics.

Around 1015 he moved to Greyton where he fathered 14 children.  The five rooms have been named after his five wives.  No official record of his passing or place of burial exists, although folklore cites spontaneous combustion as his cause of death.

His spirit lives on in The Lord Pickleby Guest House.
